a.) Edwin Land utilized various entrepreneurship strategies to grow his Polaroid Corporation. Firstly, he instilled his philosophy of concept development in his team. This is seen through the five thousand steps speech he made to his team, where he identified the need to develop exceptional products. This holds great importance in today’s business world. Innovation in products is essential for capturing and maintaining market attention. In the case of Polaroid, the well-developed concept of capturing and developing a picture in a few minutes is what allowed Land to become a successful entrepreneur.
b.) Effective presentation is essential for a product to capture market attention. Edwin Land presents an early example of why this is necessary. As CEO of Polaroid, he would stand at the stage, explain and demo the products all by himself. During such presentations, he explained the functionality of the product with a passion that spilled over to the audience. Great presentations are also important in today’s markets. They enable markets to develop a desire for owning the products under presentation. The best example of this is seen through Apple during the Steve Jobs era. Jobs, an admirer of Land, employed the same philosophy as he introduced revolutionary products such as the MacBook Air, IPad and IPhone (McCracken).
c.) Market research involves input from potential consumers, in order to streamline a product according to their needs. It has been used by various corporations with varying effects. However, Land argued against the use of such metrics during development. He famously stated that market needs could rarely be understood through this research (Bonanos 11). In that respect, he advocated extensive R&D during product development. For example, he explored how different filters could be applied to meet consumer needs, without involving their feedback. Due to that, his company was able to improve picture quality. The same approach is fundamental for success in modern markets. Extensive R&D needs to be carried out before releasing a successful product. In the words of Steve Jobs, ‘market research is what you do when your product isn’t any good.’
a.) Polarization has been used for a wide range of applications. These have gone beyond their traditional use in glare-reducing sunglasses and the Polaroid camera. In different industries, the technology has been used in photoelastic stress analysis tests during the manufacture of transparent plastics. In the future, this technology may be used for developing computers. This may be possible through the science of spintronics, which is different from the use of electron charges in current computing devices.
b.) Polarization has gained new uses in the modern entertainment industry. The technology has been used in production and showing of 3-D movies or holography (Kahkichashvily 149). These films feature two footages filmed from different points that are then projected through a polarizing filter. In ophthalmology, there have been difficulties in selective replacement of the endothelial layer of the cornea. This procedure is necessary for the reduction of the complications associated to penetrating keratoplasty. The combination of two polarization filters can enable detection of the flap edges of corneoscleral tissue. As a result, some problems in ophthalmology treatment can be solved in the future.
c.) Driving at night may be dangerous at times. The headlight glare of cars may be blinding in some situations. An accident may potentially take place due to that. As a result, polarization has been used to reduce the glare effects from the headlights of other cars. Similarly, the technology has been utilized in making car windshields. Their glass is manufactured from polaroid sheets. Light emitting diode technology is popular at the moment. It offers high brightness relative to power consumption. In the future, use of polarization may enable advancements in photonic-crystal design rules. As a result, they may feature higher brightness ratings when compared to now.
