Custom Written Essay on Effects of Robotics in Manufacturing

The introduction of modern technology in the form of industrial robots and

machines revolutionized manufacturing. These changes, however, brought

improvements but also inconveniences. This section tackles the main advantages and

disadvantages of automated production.

One of the most obvious benefits of high-tech manufacturing is increased

productivity. Unlike humans, robots perform stably and consistently. They also have

increased precision and efficiency, which guarantees quality control. Robots do not need

to take breaks nor feel fatigue either. Humans, on the other hand, are subject to error and

exhaustion. This difference gives automated production an edge over human labor.

Because robots can work longer hours at the same level of quality and productivity, they

deliver increased output and potentially greater profits (Thibodeaux, n.d.).

In addition to the extra sales gained, machines are also more cost-efficient in the

long run. In an article he wrote, Gaither acknowledged the seemingly expensive price of

having a manufacturing robot. However, he argues that the long-term benefits outweigh

the cost. Gaither points out that “Robots do not require pension, paid vacation, sick leave,

maternity leave, benefits, severance pay, or indeed, any pay at all.” Unlike their human

counterparts who are likely to ask for a raise in salary and are capable of instigating legal

disputes by throwing protest and law suits, robots use up less resources and are easier to

maintain.

While the potential benefits of automated manufacturing may seem tempting,

there are also setbacks that can make it less appealing. One of the most significant

concerns of having robots in factories is the displacement of human employees. By

acquiring equipment and machinery, the vacancies for jobs are reduced. The resulting

unemployment translates to the lack of income for the displaced employees, which can

ultimately lead to hunger and poverty. Keeping people jobless also increases the chances

of committing crimes (Gould, Weinberg & Mustard, 2002 & Raphael & Winter-Ebmer,

2001).

Another shortcoming of robots is that they lack the personal touch needed for

some products. Versatile as they are, machines are not capable of doing everything. Items

such as leather are optimized when they are handmade. These handcrafted products are

generally appreciated for their aesthetic appeal and originality. By taking away the

element of personal touch, customer satisfaction may drop, and by extension, sales.

Other disadvantages include higher maintenance and repair costs, limited

functions, and potential workplace hazards.

Whether the effects of production automation are good or bad, it cannot be denied

that robotics transformed manufacturing. Robert Lamb (2010) traced the beginning of the

modern industrial revolution to 1961, when factories first welcomed industrial robot help

in the form of Unimate. The machine was used by General Motors to perform tasks that

needed heavy labor. As the world saw how efficient and improved production can be

with the help of machines, they started to appreciate robots. Increased productivity and

therefore increased profits were motivation enough to start investing and relying on

modern industrial technology. The observed benefits of automated manufacturing have

prompted the worldwide surge in machine adaptation and industrial development today.
