Assessment of Medical Imaging Essays and Reports

Each student will have their essay/report read by one assessor in the majority of cases. A sample of marked work (normally a minimum of 10% across the mark range plus any ‘fails’) is moderated in accordance with the programme’s marking strategy. The exception to this is project report where, due to the substantial weighting of the report, it will be double-blind marked by two assessors.  In accordance with the marking strategy, each assessor must complete an individual pro-forma (see below) as applicable, on which feedback comments will be made and marks recorded.  Both assessors then meet to agree marks.

Essays and reports should:

  • Include a cover sheet stating the module code, student number, essay title and word count
  • Have a footer on each page containing the page number and student number;
  • Conform to the stated number of words. Failure to adhere to this will jeopardise marks.  An essay which is too short will not do justice to the subject, and one which is much too long will have irrelevant content;
  • Be referenced consistently and accurately.
  • Use double line spacing;
  • Use justified text;
  • Be written in the passive voice (‘third person style’);
  • Follow any specific instructions given by the module lead;
