Investigate and critically assess the value of events in the achievement of public sector organisations’ strategies’. (Need the public organization to support)
Your response must examine at least one case study organisation that uses events to achieve its strategic goals. This could be a government, city, or district.
The teaching within the study block and the first part of the seminars delivered will centre on the strategic value (or utility) of events. It looks at how organisations purposefully plan and deliver event led strategies to contribute to and achieve their objectives. This could be a city such as Seoul, a government such as Hong Kong or the UK. The teaching explores the reasons why events are an appealing approach and also considers the strategic outcomes events connect with.
The essay provides you with the freedom to focus on a case (or cases) that interest you. The requirement is that you will provide the following;
• A focussed response to the brief
• Engage enthusiastically with the range of literature in books and journal
• Go beyond the core literature to find media and industry reports and information to enhance your response
• Provide detailed and focussed case study (s) to apply the thinking and provide applied discussion
Particular instructions to students:
The assignment should be 2500 words long. Therefore 2750 words maximum with the extra 10% allowed (no more than this).
There is an expectation that your essay will make use of a wide range of references from the academic sources referred to in this module. While there is not a set of number expected, students who use multiple reference sources to create critical arguments, have in the past Module Title: Event Policy and Planning (Hong Kong) Assessment Title: Essay Individual/Group: Individual Weighting: 50% Last Submission Date: Guidance International Events and Leisure Policy Planning 2017/18 9 achieved high grades. There can be some repetition of sources within this but it is expected that they will be varied. You are also encouraged to use alternate media and industry sources (nonacademic). These are not included in the above.
The essay should be completed using Harvard Referencing protocols therefore inclusive of a correctly formatted reference list at the end.

Your task will be graded against the following weighted criteria;
• Presentation and Referencing (20%)
• Cohesion and clarity of discussion (20%)
• Evidence of relevant, wide and in-depth reading and research to inform content of essay. (30%)
• Critical and Evaluative approach (30%)
